About Us

The Vancity Hot Jazz Society is a non-profit organization, run by a fantastic board of directors, striving to encourage and promote traditional live hot jazz music in dance friendly spaces in Vancouver, BC. We currently organize the weekly Hot Jazz Jam with live hot jazz music, jam sessions, and dancing.

Hot Jazz Jam

The Hot Jazz Jam is held every Tuesday night and is hosted by rotating jazz ensembles playing vintage jazz from the 1920s to early swing era in the spirit of New Orleans hot jazz for dancers & jazz lovers alike. The later set jam sessions are open to musical guests & moderated by the band-lead of the night.

Your participation directly supports performing musicians and provides a dynamic environment to hone their craft by playing with other musicians and dancers. When possible, we are open to guest musicians for a full hot jazz jam session set.

Our events are created for musicians, dancers, and jazz lovers alike. Please spread the word and join us for an evening of live music, jamming, dancing, and fun!

Please check the Hot Jazz Jam Facebook Page for up to date band information.

Lloyd’s 90th Birthday Hot Jazz Festival

Tickets are now available on our ticket page.
Get yours before they’re gone!

Lloyd Arntzen is Vancouver’s undisputed Grandfather of Jazz and this year he is turning 90! To celebrate Lloyd and his life in jazz, the Vancity Hot Jazz Society, with contributions from the Vancouver Dixieland Jazz Society, is throwing a giant Birthday Party. Come join us on October 1, 2017 for an afternoon party with the Three Generations of Jazz, an evening party with Blackstick, or both!

Born in Saskatchewan, Lloyd discovered a love of jazz at an early age. Playing with many great musicians, he is one of the founding fathers of the Vancouver traditional jazz scene. From Dixieland Express to Blackstick, Lloyd has been everywhere sharing his love of traditional New Orleans jazz. His children and grandchildren have followed in his footsteps, many of whom have become musicians themselves.

Lloyd’s influence reaches far and wide across the Swing Dance and Jazz communities. He has been a powerful presence in the lives of many jazzers, dancers, and musicians. In honour of his contributions to the swing dance scene in Vancouver, Lloyd recently was the first person inducted into the Lindy Bout Hall of Fame and also is the most recent recipient of the Spirit of Lindy Bout Award. Join Lloyd and his family, along with special musical friends, as we celebrate!

The Afternoon Party will feature Lloyd with Three Generations of Jazz from 2pm to 5pm, while the Evening Party will highlight Lloyd’s love of the music of Sidney Bechet with the one and only Blackstick from 8pm to 11pm. Whether you enjoy soulful ballads, toe-tapping dance tunes, or technical improvisation, you will hear it all at Lloyd’s Birthday Party. There will be lots of space for dancing, a refreshing bar, ample free parking, and amazing Jazz.
